FIA 2014: A330neo officially launched as “complementation” for A350 family.

The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has today officially opened the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) 2014. He has visited the MSN4 A350 prototype accompanied by Tom Enders (Airbus Group CEO) and Al Baker (Qatar Airways CEO).

D.Cameron, T.Enders and Al Baker spent some time in the cockpit and interior of the A350, for which Qatar Airways is the global launch customer.

The aircraft is a key part of the flying display at this year’s show and is being displayed in Qatar Airways’ livery.

Qatar Airways has an Airbus A350, an A320 and a Boeing 787 Dreamliner on display at Farnborough, with the latter two being on static display. “Qatar Airways is pleased to be at the heart of this year’s Farnborough Air Show. We have 3 of the finest aircraft in the world on display, demonstrating our dynamic growth and focus on world-class quality, and are confident this week will be a successful showcase for Qatar Airways” said Al Baker.

On the first day of the Airshow, Airbus has formally launched the A330neo. Its launch has significant consequences for the A350 family. Airbus looks set to finally drop the A350-800, which is down to only 34 orders. “I believe all of our customers will either convert to the A350-900 or the A330neo”, Airbus President and CEO Fabrice Bregier said. “The A330neo is the more efficient solution (compared to the A350-800).”

What could we see in Farnborough next week concerning the A350 XWB? A330neo, A350-800 and A350-1100.

At Farnborough, “the eyes of the aviation world are on Airbus,” said Richard Aboulafia, longtime aerospace analyst with the Teal Group. “There isn’t the same level of existential dilemma for Boeing at this Air Show.”

Orders for Airbus’s newest A350, due for first delivery this year, may still flow though it will not be available to air-show buyers before 2020. To be sure, no manufacturer wants to go through an air show without at least a few announcements.

“This might be a show about conservatism, execution on existing programs and not a lot else,” said Richard Aboulafia. “This is not a bad environment, but it’s hardly the kind where you want to push further out into record territory.”

With most major airlines replete with orders for the newest planes that promise reduced fuel consumption and a path to more sustainable profitability, aircraft lessors may instead take center stage at the Farnborough event southwest of London.
“Compared to the last few air shows, we expect this year’s to be a bit flat,” RBC Capital Market’s Rob Stallard said in an investor note on July 8.
Airbus is pondering how to fill gaps at the larger and smaller ends of its lineup.

These are the questions the aviation world is now asking:
-Will Airbus launch a new version of the A330 mid-size twinjet with new fuel-efficient engines to compete against Boeing’s 787?
-At the larger end of the twinjet market, what can Airbus do to compete against Boeing’s 777X?
Airbus will fly the MSN4 prototype of the A350 with Qatar Airways –launch customer- livery.

A330neo launch?
Airbus could be poised to launch 2 versions of a re-engined A330, as tantalising evidence mounts that Airbus will substantially modernize its twin-jet workhorse to take on the Boeing 787. A330-800neo and A330-900neo

AirAsia is among carriers that have pressed for Airbus to develop a re-engined A330 while lessor Air Lease has expressed interest in becoming a launch customer.

Rolls-Royce is already the primary engine supplier to the A330 with the 72,000lb Trent 700 and, given the trend towards sole-source powerplants, would be in a prime position to offer exclusively a version of its 74,000lb Trent 1000 engine.

Barry Eccleston, chief executive of Airbus Americas said Airbus is still in discussions with airlines. Launching the jet this week at Farnborough would be “very aggressive,” he said.

A350-800 cancellation?
Emergence of an A330neo would essentially render the 276-seat A350-800 unnecessary, although Airbus has yet to clarify its plans for the type. Just five customers – Aeroflot, Asiana, Hawaiian Airlines,Yemenia and lessor AWAS – remain for the A350-800, covering orders for 34 aircraft.

All 5 are customers of the current A330 but it is unclear whether Airbus has proposed the A330neo as an alternative to their A350-800 orders.

A350-1100 launch?

The other big widebody decisions facing Airbus are more difficult to address. The one most vital to Boeing is what Airbus will do to match the new 777X. Airbus has in development the A350-1000, which at just over 350 seats is about the same size as the planned 777-8X. But against the bigger 777-9X, seating more than 400 passengers, Airbus has nothing.
Can it stretch the A350 even more to match the -9X?

Adam Pilarski, longtime industry analyst with consulting firm Avitas, said this is a complex decision, requiring close collaboration with A350-1000 engine-supplier Rolls-Royce. Still, an even bigger A350 would be costly and Airbus might struggle to do that and an A330neo at the same time. “In the end, they have to do both,” said Aboulafia. “It’ll be a while before they have the resources.”
Airbus’ Eccleston insists there isn’t any urgency to match 777X. “We’ll get around to it eventually,” he said. “It’s certainly not near the top of our priorities.”

A350 Full-flight Simulator approval for summer

Airbus is preparing to secure approval for its full-flight A350 simulator. It is located at the company’s Flight Training Centre in Toulouse.

This training device has been fine-tuned using data from the A350’s flight tests and is getting ready for its qualification process with aviation authorities this summer.

Based on a CAE Series 7000 simulator and equipped with the latest visual system, the A350 full-flight simulator is the Training Centre’s first such device to be fitted with a full electrical motion system – which delivers the same or improved performance compared to a hydraulic system while providing energy savings and environmental benefits.

It  will be put into operation in the 4th quarter this year, the same time period in which Qatar Airways is due to receive its first aircraft.

Someone has reserved 'A350-300' Internet domains.

Recent Internet domain-registration activity suggests a concerted effort, by unidentified parties, to protect particular names including 'A350-300' and 'A330neo'.

FlightGlobal has detected that the US-based brand-protection company CSC has secured on 2/July 2 high-profile domain names  containing the terms ‘A350-200’ and ‘A350-300’.

There is no immediate indication that Airbus is linked to any of the reservations.

European trademark databases do not show any formal entry for A330neo, A350-200 or A350-300 and Airbus has not confirmed whether any of these brands have been formally submitted for inclusion.

Curiously a version of the site map for the upcoming Farnborough air show appeared to include an allocated aircraft space labelled ‘A350-200’, including tail height data matching that of the A330-200.

Similar internet domain names associated with the term ‘A330neo’ have been also reserved by the same company.

Airbus declines to comment on whether it might use the A350 brand for any A330 re-engining program.

Premium Aerotec A350 Tier1 trying to recover the critical situation of 2013 with more-than-support from Airbus.

German aircraft parts supplier Premium Aerotec GmbH expects to book a positive operating result in 2014 after incurring a loss before interest and tax of EUR 620 million in 2013. The turnover figure (1.6 billion €) is similar to 2012 figure.

For 2014 the supplier -headquartered in Augsburg- is expecting positive EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) recovering the black-numbers of 2012.

Main reason for loss in 2013 were “development, start-up costs and overtime for the production of the A350 model” that is ramping up aggressively in 2013 and 2014. “There are also serious internal problems, which had resulted in high production costs since the company was founded”.

“Logistics and software of different sites need to be harmonized urgently” said Aerotec´s spokeman Krüger.

Premium Aerotec has around 9.300 employees. In addition to the headquarters in Augsburg, Germany, the company has plants in Varel, Nordenham and Bremen as well as a site in Romania.

Premium Aerotec CEO Hoppe pointed out in this interview that he wants the company works as a team; “there are cultural problems and lack of integration between sites”.

“We are structurally too weak to cope with so much work, and this resulted in missing-parts and quality problems that has forced us to allocate more than 2.000 temporary workers to avoid impacting deliveries” he said.
“We need at least 2 to 3 years to re-develop the company and solve all structural problems. What we are going to do, on airline language is a complete overhaul with running engines on the runway.”
"Currently around 70 employees from Airbus help us intensely. And additional 40 procurement team supports us subcontracting some tasks to cheaper companies in Turkey, India and United States. We should outsource up to 900.000 working hours over the next few years to reduce costs. But we remain committed to the core workforce”

“We will do it well, with discipline. We have no other choice.”

A350’s maintenance program submitted for approval to authorities.

The A350’s maintenance program has been submitted for approval to the EASA, FAA and Transport Canada airworthiness authorities, representing a major milestone in preparations for the jetliner’s service introduction.

Definitive approval is expected during the summer, prior to the aircraft’s type certification and first customer delivery.

The early involvement of Airbus’ maintenance and engineering teams – and discussions with authorities and customers – contributed to the development of an efficient A350 XWB maintenance program.

In particular, it will feature fewer and simpler maintenance visits, and flexible packaging of tasks, resulting in reduced scheduled maintenance workload compared with earlier generation aircraft.

Spirit plans workforce adjustments in the transition to A350 series production.

Some salaried workers at Spirit AeroSystems’ Kinston, N.C. plant may be laid off as one of its major programs there continues to transition from development to production.

Officials from the Wichita-based company said that as the work in Kinston on the Airbus A350 commercial jetliner transitions, there will be a “small number” of salaried employees who will be reassigned to other work at Spirit or laid off, without specifying the number of people affected.
“We did have some changes in our work statement” Spirit spokesman Ken Evans said. “It’s all on the salaried side of business. At the same time we are realigning and reducing some of our salaried workforce, we continue to expect measured hiring for hourly positions to support production rates.
Spirit has about 440 employees in it´s 500.000-square-foot facility at N.C. Global TransPark in Kinston where the composite A350 center fuselage upper & lower shells and wing spar are manufactured.

These parts are sent by plane to Spirit´s European facilities in  Saint-Nazaire (France) and Prestwick (Scotland) to complete the installation prior to deliver them to Airbus pre-FALs.
